Kate Bosworth Just Doesn’t Do it For Me

There were only two things wrong with the film Superman Returns: 1) The length 2) Kate Bosworth.

Bryan Singer bowed out from directing X-Men 3 in order to head in another comic book direction by directing Superman Returns. He handles the film well, so much so that it rivals his previous stints with the X-Men triology. It’s disappointing though since Superman Returns is precisely what X-Men 3 should have been in terms of dialogue. As Jean Grey’s power spiraled out of control, her murdering Professor Xavier and Scott Summers didn’t pack as much of a punch as it should have. Instead, without enough dialogue to make anyone care, her ability to shred people into dust seemed a lot more important than who she was doing it to. In Superman Returns, the relationship Clark Kent has with other characters aren’t as complicated or in need of a thorough exploration. He’s an alien outcast with a unnecessarily tangled love affair with Lois Lane; what more is there to say? The tug and pull between Superman and Lane reach a point of overkill (Ok, so he disappeared for 5 years, so what?).

Brandon Routh plays the role with grace and sophistication, taking Clark Kent’s awkwardness down a few notches to a far more realistic level. Routh makes you love Superman, who is both vulnerable to emotional turmoil but always present when trouble brews. The director, Bryan Singer, sprinkles some Christ imagery here and there but not enough to alter the pace or the mood of the scene.

Kate Bosworth was a suprising casting decision for the spunky, persistant reporter Lois Lane. Bosworth looks too soft and too adorable to play an eager, intelligent woman in the city. Her presence lacks a certain oomph and her sex appeal onscreen (when she’s not in a bikini) seems dim and unexciting. According to IMDB.com, Keri Russell was considered to play the part of Lois Lane and after seeing her as an agent in Mission Impossible: III she had potential to pull it off.

Regardless, Superman Returns is exactly the kind of summer movie that I am willing to pay 10 bucks a pop for and leave feeling as if I got my money’s worth.

Haha, I just wrote (somewhat) of this movie myself, and I couldn’t agree less. Superman wasn’t worth the money, nor attention I payed it. But I am OK with Bosworth; it would have been Keri Russell I’d be worried about.

Superman Returns actually looks pretty good, even though I’m not much into the whole superhero thing. And I think we all need an actress to hate in life. Unfortunately, I don’t know who mine is yet.

I was going to go see it, but I never really was into superman as much as I should have when I was a wee little child…I was more, OMG THE SPICE GIRLS ARE MY SUPER HEROS… but my brother liked Superman so maybe I’ll go see it…

I saw this one too with the boys. They disliked it. I liked the action of the airplane scene but really in this day and age of mighty super-villians does Lex Luther even seem a worthy opponent?

Was Kate “Lois Lane enough” I’d have to agree and say no. She is pretty but not formidable. The whole love triangle is a weird way to take the story. Where will the sequel go? Was it worth it, not the $40 i spent taking three kids who asked “is it over yet” and jut had to go to the bathroom through the movie.

I don’t like Kate Bosworth either… can’t say why exactly, she doesn’t jump off the screen or have that certain “spark.” Does that make sense?

I have to agree - Kate Bosworth was MISCAST. The role of Lois Lane should have gone to Parker Posey. She has more chemistry with Brandon Routh than Bosworth did. I liked that the picked up the franchise where it left off and not start all over again, but if that’s true then, why cast someone who looks way too young for the role. Overall, Superman Returns, was a bit of a let-down. Nice to see the franchise reived again. Hopefully, the next one will be a bit better. Definitely, not as good as Superman 1 or 2 -

Ranking:
Superman II
Superman
Superman Returns
Superman III
Superman IV: The quest for Peace

Kate is not a very good actress. She seems like a nice girl though! Keri Russell would have been AWESOME! There is no one that can act as well as she can!
