Doing It Yourself Doesn’t Mean Making It Crappier

Spikspgl, a close friend of mine, built himself a light box (or a light tent) and posted some of his results on flickr. Inspired by his creation, I decided I would make one at 2:30am this morning. Of course, since I didn’t have any foamboard or fullspectrum bulbs handy (like this helpful tutorial recommends) I decided that it would be a great idea to take the Cheap $1 route. Sure, the diagram makes it look simple enough. Using only 5 sheets of A4 paper, some clear tape, and poor measurements, I end up with this depressing, droopy, well-intentioned mess of creativity:

NICE JOB It almost looks like a gaping mouth, tongue flapping out aghast at its own ridiculousness. As if to say, Ack! Nice folding job, asshole. Had I actually taken the time to fold more carefully, it might hold itself together with a little dignity.

Using a desk lamp, I aimed the light into the box and straight up to avoid unnecessary shadows and reveal the creases in the paper. The whole process looked a little funny but the photos I took aren’t as terrible as I thought they’d be:

I need proper lighting since the pink construction paper developed two entirely different hues. I’m not exactly using the greatest camera (Canon Powershot SD550) for micro shots but it works. I’m interested in making the PVC Light Tent which should provide more clarity and opportunities to take pictures of cute things (This is, of course, extremely important).

I’ve let another month go by since I’ve posted an entry and I forgot to celebrate the first anniversary of Shibooya (I think this happened sometime in June). I’m in the middle of my fall semester and I know this because my professors have assigned astronomically difficult midterms to remind us that we will never amount to anything. I’m giving a short presentation on Jean-Francois Lyotard, a postmodern theorist who does nothing but whine about the myth of unity and reality. Blah, blah, blah - Once I get my diploma I’m going to make a point of forgetting all this nonsense.

That box thing is really cute and a pretty good idea. It also looks easy and somewhat simple to make. This basically renders it still too difficult for me. All well.

Good to see you posting again!
And you know, it doesn’t really matter how the lightbox looks,
as long as the pictures come out great!

So this is how you spend your time. Your parents must be so proud. No wonder you are overwhelmed. :)
