Does Anyone Actually Watch the VMA’s Anymore?
I, like most of us, am sick to death of the MTV Video Music Awards even though I can’t remember the last time I actually sat down and made an effort to watch it from beginning to end. The show isn’t so much the horrible car wreck we couldn’t take our eyes off than it is an annoying fender bender that unnecessarily holds up traffic. You strain to catch a glimpse of gore and limbs, anything good, but it ultimately ends in disappointment. As one ONTDer pointed out, MTV has a lot of nerve to host a Video Music Awards when 90% of their broadcast are consumed with reruns of The Hills.
The only way I managed to catch Britney Spears’ much talked about performance (and, really, can we even call it a performance?) was by catching a clip of it on Youtube. What can be said about Ms. Spears’s interpretive dance at the VMA’s that hasn’t been said before. Ditto, internet, ditto.

YES! YES! THANK YOOOOU! I was sick of seeing news about Spears & the VMAs on CNN ALL day yesterday and then having to hear coworkers blab on about it at work. Is the whole of America really that concerned about it? Sure, I READ about Spears b/c if I didn’t I’d have no idea what coworkers were going on about for hours (hahahaha!.)

I never watch them anymore.. any award show for that matter. I watched Britney on MTV.com b/c I was curious to see how she did. I’m SO sick of award shows in general, blegh~

you know it totally sucked when the only thing anyone can talk about is someone’s disaster performance and a a rocker slapping another rocker

ugh, I didn’t watch the VMA’s. I think I’m the only person who hasn’t seen Britney… though, is anyone really surprised that she did so poorly? it’s like tuning in to see a train wreck.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels the same way, Jen. I think their ratings have actually taken a dive. I think Kanye’s remarks about MTV using Britney as a gimmick has a grain of truth to it.
Jenn, I haven’t even seen any music videos on MTV. The ones I have seen I caught on youtube!
asma, you’re right, that was pretty much all I heard about the show. No one talked about the winners.
Sasha, You’re right. What did everyone expect out of that performance? They just wanted to watch her crash and burn.

i never really watched that show. but i did look up that video of Brit to see what all the fuss was all about it. the look on her face horrified me the most, she was still totally out of it. she should just quit the music business and start taking care of her children and herself!

You’re right, Ciel. Maybe she’ll clean up her act some day

I think I watched the VMA’s back in 2002, maybe even 2003. But I don’t anymore, probably because no artist I like is nominated anymore =P
I had even forgotten they existed, I remembered in these days after the Britney scandal.

Ugh, the VMAs have certainly hit a new low for what constitutes an awards show. They seem to go for the low-blow-shock tactic everytime. I usually don’t watch these with the expectation that anything of note is usually repeated tirelessly on entertainment news all over TV-land. Needless to say, I am never disappointed.
And as for Britney *sigh*, I see her more as a commentary on American society. She’s one person kinda screwing up, but that happens. The fact that everyone is so fixated on it… that’s a little embarassing.

I saw it, although I usually don’t watch it. But, just like Justin Timberlake said like 3 times: “Show more music videos, MTV!”

Amen, Kenneth!
