I was in a car accident this past weekend and clearly by the post title and the fact that I’m typing this indicates that I’m fine and everything’s fine.
But it was probably the scariest moment of my life thus far. I was driving on a highway when a it started raining - heavy sheets of water that blurred my vision. Realizing I was probably going a little too fast for the sudden weather conditions (approximately 50-55 mph), I braked which caused my car to violently fishtail. I panicked and did exactly what I’m not supposed to do in such a situation: I braked harder. My car started drifting in a Too Fast Way Too Furious manner. I just braced for impact and thought to myself, Well great, now this is where my life ends. The front end of my car slammed into the guard rail which sent my car spinning 360 degrees 2 or 3 times. My trunk crashed into the guardrail and bounced me back into the lane facing oncoming traffic where I finally came to a stop.
Numbly, I reversed on to the shoulder and reached for my phone which was in my back pocket but was somehow now on the floor. I was shaking and breathless. I felt like I was dreaming. Paramedics arrived, an officer asked me what happened, my parents and boyfriend showed up in what felt like seconds. My car was wrecked. And, finally, once alone in my father’s truck, I started to cry.
Now, rather reluctantly, I am seeing a chiropractor for pain in my neck, upper back and shoulders. It’s not that I don’t believe in chiropractic - I just feel like perhaps the pain will go away on it’s own if I give it some time. But, at the recommendation of some friends and family, I decided what the hell - crack my back.
I’m now the proud owner of a 2001 Canary Yellow Volkswagon Beetle and the are every bit of fun to drive as people say they are. The car is in great shape and drives smooth. I couldn’t be happier, or luckier.
I’m lucky to have a family and a boyfriend who were at my side in an instant. I’m lucky that I didn’t hit anyone nor was I hit. I’m lucky that I have a new, reliable, affordable vehicle. I’m lucky that I didn’t sustain any major injuries or financial burdens. And I’m really lucky that my Beetle has a flower vase.
