I’m Preparing for a Failure of Epic Proportions

I’m hosting Thanksgiving dinner, again. The last time I hosted Thanksgiving dinner I was still living at home and I don’t even think I cooked turkey. I probably cheated by buying a Honey Baked Ham only I can’t remember. Now I’m living with my boyfriend and this will be the first time my parents and his parents will meet.

So, obviously, there’s a lot of pressure to make sure the turkey doesn’t, you know, kill anyone. I found a few recipes online that look promising and uncomplicated. More importantly, I’m learning invaluable details that I would have otherwise done horribly wrong. Such as:

A 15 lb Turkey takes approximately 3 days to defrost.

How to carve a turkey.

What kind of turkey to buy.

And “the little thing in the turkey that pops out is a piece of crap“.

good luck with your turkey! i would never even attempt that, because I have a habit of messing up simple things such as rice.

LOL. I am still in denial that the turkey arrives on the table fully prepared. Thank goodness my mother doesn’t mind cooking when she comes to AZ to visit! Otherwise this Thanksgiving might involve frozen dinners.

Sara, I love to cook anyway so I don’t mind taking on this challenge but with me it always takes a couple of tries to get right, so I hope I don’t foil up this first crack at a turkey.

oooh, you’ve gotta brine turkey! i have a failsafe brining method & turkey recipe from cook’s that never fails, and if you want it, i am happy to pass it along. :D

I got so confused then realized it was Thanksgiving in the US (since we just had ours last month).

I can’t wait to get my own place and cook turkey dinner for everyone. I hate cooking at home because my kitchen is small and my parents are so annoying.

Oh, irenie that will be great! I’ll email you! I’ve been thinking about using a recipe that involves putting butter under the skin while roasting. I’ve heard brining can be a laborious process.

Katy, I love being a hostess and trying new recipes on my friends. I guess I inherited my grandmother’s tendency to find satisfaction when other people eat. It’s a very latin thing to love people with food! :)

minutestar, I’ve never thought about if turkey was available around the country. That’s pretty interesting actually! Well, you could always substitute with ham. That’s what Hispanic families typically do with thanksgiving.
