It’s Early
But I am so ready for the holidays.

1. Christmas Aquarium, 2. Light Up House, 3. Snowflake, 4. Light Up Snowman
Participating in NaBloPoMo can be difficult, especially when this weekend consisted of early Christmas decorating. I was too busy transforming my boyfriend’s bamboo aquarium into a winter wonderland (in progress).
I’ve gone through phases of Christmas enthusiasm – there were years when I just couldn’t stand the holiday. Now I look forward to it, maybe now that I’ve turned 25, I have a renewed sense of familial responsibility. In American culture, spending quality time with family is seen as both a duty and a burden. Take for instance the Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn comedy, Four Christmases, they go out of their way to avoid their families. I don’t really get it, or at least, I should say I’m blessed that I don’t have the kind of family I want to avoid.
But I digress. The turkey is now defrosting and I still haven’t settled on a recipe. My penpal, Irene, sent me a really interesting recipe on brining. I’m not opposed to it, but I don’t have a clean bucket and I’ll probably forget something vital like rinsing the turkey after it’s spent 6 hours in cold, saltwater. My turkey is also, possibly, self-basting. I don’t know, I kind of just grabbed a 14lb frozen Publix turkey with giblets.
I don’t think I’ll make stuffing and opt for filling the bird with onion quarters, celery and herbs – this may be a terrible idea. I’m also planning on making my own gravy and I may possibly make tembleque. But, I mean, this is me being terribly optimistic about my cooking abilities. Wish me luck!
