I Always Make Time for Food
I’ve been baking a lot these past few days. This morning I gave coworkers boxes (decorated by my mother) of sugar cookies, Oreo snowball truffles and jars of grapefruit marmalade:
My boss remarked, “Wow, you must have a lot of time on your hands.” Which reminded me of a funny chapter in Sloane Crosley’s “I was Told There’d be Cake”:
“Resist the urge to bake for your coworkers,” cried the book. “You’re not Betty Crocker!” [...] I slide the book back onto the shelf, unaware of how sage the advice was. [...] Since baking has been my one consistent hobby since pre-school, I often turn to it in times of stress. Just in time for the holidays, I had learned to make that smooth solid icing that goes on professionally decorated sugar cookies. I stayed up half the night in the kitchen, making stockings, Stars of David, triple chocolate lumps of coal, and red circles that would have to be explained as “reindeer noses.”
She goes on to describe how she made a cookie in the likeness of her cruel, unforgiving boss and was never able to live down the embarrassment. And it’s funny, because it would never occur to me to do something so ridiculous but I truly believe that food has such a universal appeal to people – everyone likes getting well-made, great tasting food as gifts or as tokens of appreciation. So, you may think cooking and baking is an indication of a lot of time on my hands, but you’re welcome anyway.
Don’t forget, the marmalade giveaway is ending this Wednesday! So make sure to leave a comment on the post if you want a free jar like this one:
After all these sweets, I’ve got something else on my mind: dinner. Which is just as well since I spent well over $100.00 on books of a culinary nature. Oh, Borders, why must you constantly tempt me with your Buy 2 Get One Free deals and bargain cookbook section!

You’re so sweet of a co-worker!! It’s not that you have countless and endless time… it just probably didn’t take as much time for you. But the wrapping is BEAUTIFUL!! Wow… oreo truffles… made my mouth water there!

Thanks Destiny! My mom did a great job with wrapping, she has such an eye for design!
I think you’re right too, the goodies didn’t take me a long time to make, but they probably look it!
