Must. Make. Jam.

MC8th Dec 2008The Daily Nonsense, , , , , ,

When I latch on to a new interest or task, I really sink my teeth into it. My latest obsession is making and canning jam. I want to give the finished products to friends and coworkers and thought a cute 1.5 oz or 4 oz jar would do the trick. I can find neither locally and would have to settle with buying a crate of 24 online. Not only couldn’t I wait for the jars to be shipped, I didn’t want to take the chance of buying an assload of jars and ending up using less than half of them.

On my lunch break, I headed over to Wal-Mart and was delightfully surprised to find a small section for canning complete with pectin boxes and jars (albeit enormous for my purposes).

I am on a mission to make marmalade out of my grapefruit and my marmalade out of my kumquats. I will begin the endeavor tonight. Stay tuned….

Good luck! My dad makes jam every year. If he can do it, I’m sure yours will be successful. :)

If you can figure out how to make marmalade without adding tons of sugar, I’m interested. BTW, thanks for visiting my site. Would you like to add me to your blogroll and I’ll add you to mine? Let me know.

Judy, I know what you mean, I couldn’t believe the recipe calls for 4 cups of sugar! I was shocked! The batch is pretty big, but that’s still a ton of a sugar.

To cut down, other recipes call for pectin (a natural occurring agent) that gels the jam with low or no sugar. I will probably try that next since my mother is pre-diabetic.
