Washington D.C. but first, Cookies!

MC23rd Dec 2008The Daily Nonsense, , , , , , ,

Yesterday, I had every intention of writing a detailed post about my weekend trip to D.C. but instead, while grooming my dog outside on the patio – I locked myself out of the house.

It was also ironic since I recently finished Sloane Crosely’s book, I Was Told There’d be Cake in which there’s an essay she describes the 3 times she locked herself out of her new apartment. I kept thinking to myself how obnoxious and careless she was. Then yesterday, I locked myself out of the house, for the fourth time.

Of course, it just so happened to be a chilly, windy day outside (though you’d think being in 38 degree weather in D.C. would have prepared me). So, I spent the first hour outside, desperately trying to break into my own house and concluded that my house, short of breaking the glass door (which is pretty hard to do since they’re hurricane-grade glass) is impenetrable. I offhandedly thought how perfect my house would be in the event of a zombie invasion.

Then I spent another 30 minutes trying to train my useless border collie, Elwood, to jump up and push the security bar that kept the sliding glass door closed. I spent all his puppyhood training him not to jump on guests and now, when I needed his excitement the most, he decides Oh no, this must be a trick! and lies down to stare at me through the glass.

Finally, I gave up and walked over to my neighbor’s house wearing my, I shit-you-not, rubber duckie pajama pants and blue thermal top. I called my boyfriend who had to leave work early to save his obnoxious, careless girlfriend.

As a result, I couldn’t very well say no to him when he asked me to make a dessert for his potluck at work the next day. So I made chocolate chip cookies last night based off of this recipe. I scaled it to 35 servings which threw off the measurements quite a bit. Against my better judgment, I went ahead with the recipe and ended up with chewy, chocolate chip cookies but with way too much brown sugar. It wasn’t terrible, just bland and packed.

A few weeks ago, I won a Bakespace.com giveaway – the first season set of Pushing Daisies which included a spatula and pie cutter. Babette, owner of Bakespace.com also included a generous stack of Bakespace.com recipe swapping cards. Want one? Send me an email with your snail mail address!

Once I get through my very long list of things to do, you can expect a picture filled, informative post of what to expect when your touring and eating in D.C.

luckily (or possibly unluckily?) my house is pretty much impossible to get locked out of. also, my downstairs neighbors (i.e. bro & sis) have keys, just in case. but not getting locked is just as good a reason to bake cookies as this… so i think that’s what i’ll do tonight! :)

Love chocolate chip cookies. Especially with a big glass of cold milk. Nothing makes you feel better!

I just realized if I indeed made all of these foods on these blogs I would be so obese I could not type this message with my huge fingers.

You could get one of those rope things that you can hang around your neck or your dog’s with the key on a detachable loop. Dude that sucks to get locked out. It’s worse with a car.

OK. Forgive the self promotion, but oh my gosh, if you’re looking for a knockout chocolate-chip cookie, I’ve got it!

I posted it on my site here: http://foodloveswriting.com/2008/09/01/and-finally-the-long-weekend/.

You have to keep the dough chilled for 2 to 3 days (the only downside), but it’s so worth it, I swear!

Bland or no, the cookie photo does look delicious. I really want chocolate chip cookies now. :)

And congrats on winning the Bakespace giveaway! Very cool. I have yet to join that community… is it good?

Irenie, I’ve learned from this experience to give everyone I know a spare key. It’s easier that way. I had about 4 spare keys made of my car. I lock myself out often.

Shortee, there are so many awesome food blogs. I save a lot of recipes but I feel like I’ll never get to them all! I know how you feel!

Shannalee, I’m sold, I’ll have to try that!

Ari, Bakespace is fun! The forums are always busy, it’s a great place to start a conversation about food! It’s still evolving, so I’m sure there are more great things in store!
