Menu Planning
Recently, I’ve been struggling with making meals every night that are cohesive and timely. I usually have no idea what I’m making until hours before dinner then feel flustered when I notice I don’t have the ingredients I need to make recipes I find online or in my cookbooks. A lot of scrambling and improvising is involved and sometimes I’m left with what I like to call “WTF dishes”.
After some searching, I found an excellent how-to on Simplemom.net. She suggests using google calendar to organize meals which is something I’d never think to do and an ingenious way of sharing the menu with the boyfriend (who can make suggestions or request another meal on another night) and on the blog.
At first, I got a little overwhelmed, I’m tried menu planning before but without a set schedule or reminder. I’m a planner but I’m not an organizer – so having to sort out side dishes and writing up a grocery list at the same time, it seemed tedious. But Simplemom’s recommendation worked and now I have my first week’s worth of meals planned:
If you click on the day details you’ll find the link to the recipe for that particular meal. And while Simplemom repeats her meal plan every 2 weeks, I’d easily get bored with the menu, especially with so many cool things on Tastespotting.com I couldn’t just tie down to the same meals every two weeks even out of convenience.
Do you use Simplemom’s meal planning method? How do you usually menu plan?
