The Way You Make Me Feel
Jessie posted an amazing looking BLT at The Hungry Mouse and it instantly reminded me of the sandwiches my family and I are always in the habit of making as our go-to quick lunch or breakfast meal. It was a kind of comfort food we relied on during the summer and an inside running joke – we’d say to each other in Spanish, This family eats so many sandwhiches we’re going to start looking like sandwiches.
Inspired, I headed over to Bravo supermarket after work for some Cuban bread (a must when making these kinds of sandwiches) and assembled a sandwich for dinner that would make my family proud. Imagine my surprise when during the meal, I received a phone call from a friend.
“Did you hear? MJ is dead!”
My heart skipped a beat, “Who?”
“Micheal Jackson!”
Mouthful of eggs and bread, I rushed over to turn on the television to confirm the news. If there ever was a need of comfort food, that moment was certainly it. My feelings are similar to other mourners who feel like they’ve lost a part of their childhood. We all grew up with Micheal Jackson, danced to our favorite songs, imitated his trademark moves and shook our heads when he dangled babies out of windows.
It’s definitely been a strange week, but buck up everyone, have a sandwich on me:
Makes enough for 2 sandwiches
Cuban bread (preferably fresh, squeeze the bread to ensure it’s still soft and hot – it’s ok, all Latinos do this)
3 eggs
4 slices of bacon (I used turkey bacon)
salt & pepper
Shredded cheese of your preference
Half a green pepper
Half a small onion
Half a small tomato
2 slices of ham and turkey
A handful of leaves of spinach
- Cut Cuban bread into sandwich slices (you can toast these a bit before serving if you like)
- Set oven to low broil, stick in slices of bacon to bake (set to hi if you want crispy bacon)
- Heat about a tablespoon of butter in a medium skillet to low-medium heat
- Chop green pepper, onion and tomato and add to skillet
- Whisk eggs together in a separate bowl and season with dashes of salt and pepper
- Add to skillet and cook until eggs are solid
- Add shredded cheese until melted, put heat on lowest setting
- Use a small skillet to heat up your slices of ham and turkey, this only takes a few minutes
- By now your bacon is ready, so pull it out and assemble your sandwich (I usually like it in this order: bread, spinach leaves, deli meats, egg, bacon and finally bread)

That looks like an awesome sandwich (eventhough I’m a vegetarian, haha).. I know I would have loved it during my meat eating days! XD
I was surprised when I heard he died, too. I was online & had my TwitterFox open so that’s how I found out. It’s very sad. ;____;

Wow, that sandwich looks awesome – mmm, I may need to make one of those!
Yeah, even though I was never a MJ fan (when I was a kid it was more fashionable to make fun of him), I can’t really imagine life without him as a major pop culture figure. However, my husband (who’s 5 years older than me) was devastated and has already made me watch the movie Moonwalker…

I think he death will mean different things to different people – I just think it’s a shame that the younger generation only got to know Bizarro Micheal who messed up his face and danced on top of SUVs instead of the Micheal that inspired all of us to dance without caring what anyone thought!

At first I thought it was a joke – it just seemed so random. Now, with all the other deaths that seem to be happening at the same time – it’s just so strange!
