I Always Adhere to The 5-Second Rule

Messed Up Pie

This is supposed to be Banana Creme Pie with Meringue. You can’t see the meringue not because we ate it all, but because it ended up on the floor. So this is what happened:

My sister and I made this pie and it was good. Very good. So we were very proud of ourselves. I put the finished pie on a cookie sheet and attempted to put the pie into the oven to brown the meringue. Unfortunately, I completely underestimated the weight of the pie and my ability to put the cookie sheet into the oven with one hand. My wrist, which has, say, the circumference of a toothpick, started to strain as the pie slid towards the edge of the sheet and teetered precariously over the edge. I started shrieking for someone, anyone to help me.

I think I was saying, “SAAAAAAAVE IT!”

It was too late. The pie went free falling and landed with a splat on the tiled kitchen floor.

My sister, not 2 feet away, still maintains that she was too far away to save our dessert. Pregnant or no, I expect a full out game-saving, bases-loaded, baseball slide for Banana Creme Pie.

Honey and Vanilla Cupcakes with Blue Vanilla Frosting, you’re welcome.

Florida’s humidity makes it impossible for buttercream frosting to exist outside of the refrigerator without the components separating and melting. I had mild success with a different recipe that calls for boiling flour with milk which is later added to butter and sugar. Still, only mild success.

A new blog redesign is forthcoming.

P.S. Harry Potter “dies” but he lives in the end. Voldemort kills himself accidentally and some other stuff happens. And I didn’t even read the book or actively seek out spoilers. I sympathize with true Potter fans that are trying to maintain the ending as a surprise.

Small-Batch Baking Makes Me Feel Less Guilty About Eating It

I enjoy time alone as much as the next person, but after a lightning strike fried the alarm system at the house last week (an ongoing insurance saga), I felt a certain level of anxiety from having to spend yesterday evening entirely alone without the security of having a loud siren to scare away potential intruders.

After finishing the novel Disgrace and flipping through some sewing books, I decided that the only way I could truly relax was if I had a cookie. It was nearly midnight. Surely, no one would attempt to murder a girl in her home-made apron while she was baking cookies at nearly midnight.

CookiesI baked six delightfully yummy caramel and chocolate chip cookies using a simple recipe in Small-Batch Baking, a book with recipes to yield small portions for two or three people. Now, if only I can make two or three friends.
